If I were in charge, the following days would be fully-recognized, widely-celebrated holidays. Businesses and schools would be closed, the government would shut down, people would gather with family and friends, and there’d be big cookouts with lots of alcohol. I already celebrate some of the holidays on this list myself, but it would be much more fun if I could celebrate all of them, especially if lots of other people were doing the same. FACT OF THE DAY
- 8/7/11: Bangladesh, with a land area of just 130,168 km2 (slightly smaller than Louisiana), has more people than Russia, which has a land area of 16,377,742 km2 (about twice the size of the U.S.). 151 million to 143 million.
- 7/30/11: On August 15, 1944, two months after the D-Day landings in Normandy, Allied forces launched a second amphibious invasion of France, known as Operation Dragoon. This invasion was launched from the island of Corsica and landed on the Mediterranean coast.
- 7/22/11: More Spanish-speaking people live in the United States than in Spain. Mexico is first with 111 million speakers, the U.S. second with 50 million, and Spain third with 47 million. (By contrast, the U.S. comes in just fifth when ranking only native speakers, with 35 million.)
- 7/20/11: The United States has a Strategic Petroleum Reserve... that's not the fact of the day. The fact of the day is that China has a Strategic Pork Reserve. No joke: NY Times
